- Story Text: U.N. monitors set off on humanitarian visits around Damascus on Tuesday (July 17), as clashes in the Syrian capital carried on for a third day.
The monitors were planning to visit hospitals and schools ahead of a Security Council session on Wednesday (July 18) that would define the future of their mission in the country.
This violence is the fiercest fighting to hit Syria's seat of power since the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad began 17 months ago and comes as United Nations envoy Kofi Annan is visiting Moscow to promote a peace plan for Syria.
Annan is expected to meet President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, but Russia still appears resistant to Western calls for Moscow to increase pressure on Assad. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
