- Story Text: Syrian rebels on Monday (June 25) welcomed the presidential victory of Egypt's Mohamed Mursi as a triumph for the revolution in their country.
In the northern town of Binnish, in the Idlib province, rebels said Mursi supported ousting President Bashar al Assad.
"Concerning victory of Mohamed Mursi as top leader, it is a victory for the Syrian revolution, because Mohamed Mursi supported the Syrian revolution outright and refused to meet the Russian council and Charge d'Affair of Iran because they support the regime and this regime is corrupt. Mohamed Mursi said he supports Syrian rebels with all available Egypt resources," Sheikh Mohammad, leader of the anti-Assad popular movement in Binnish.
A Binnish town resident said the Islamists would rule fairly.
"The Islamists do not frighten other groups, they are going to rule with justice, god willing. The Islamists do not monopolise authority because they rule according to Allah's teachings, and do not hold hatred for any other group across the Arab region," said an unnamed resident.
Syria has plunged into a bloody confrontation between rebels and activists seeking to overthrow President Bashar al Assad and government troops.
