- Story Text: Syrian authorities on Wednesday (July 11) released 275 detainees, two days after United Nations envoy Kofi Annan visited the country and met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Eighty of the detainees were released in Damascus, with U.N. monitors present while the rest was set free simultaneously in other Syrian cities.
Over 3,000 detainees have been released in the past seven months.
Releasing detainees is one of the key demands of the Annan plan to end the 16-month crisis in the country.
The Syrian government had started the release process before the six-point plan was agreed on. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
