- Story Text: Anti-Assad protesters took to the streets of Aleppo late on Wednesday (August 1), despite the ongoing battle for control of Syria's largest city.
Young boys were among the crowd, which gathered in Aleppo's commercial hub after the day's shelling had died down.
More than a week of fighting has turned much of Aleppo into a dusty ghost city, with shops shuttered, streets empty of traffic and local people mostly gone.
Government forces have pounded the city from the air and with heavy artillery, attempting to break the rebel hold on key areas but Free Syrian Army fighters have mounted a fierce resistance.
On Thursday (August 2) rebels turned the gun of a captured tank against government forces, shelling a military airbase expected to be used as a staging post for army reinforcements in the battle for Aleppo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
