Syrian rebels on Wednesday (August 15) foiled an attempt by the Syrian Army to take over the northern Turkish frontier gate of Bab al-Hawa.
A Syrian Army convoy was heading from Aleppo to Bab Al-Hawa, when it was attacked by rebels fighters on the highway of Hazzano, 12 kilometres north of Idlib, according to rebel fighters.
Video obtained by Reuters shows footage of Syrian rebels shooting at military tanks and helicopters, which belong to the Syrian Army.
"Now, the Aleppo southern brigade is fighting the convoy [belonging to Syrian Army] which is heading from Idlib to Bab Al-Hawa area. The [convoy] carrying tanks, pick-up trucks, and shabihas are being faced by the Aleppo southern brigade with the help of the northern Idlib brigade," said a rebel who did not give his name.
As tanks of the regime's convoy burnt, rebels chanted "God is greater" in celebration.
Bodies of Syrian soldiers, who were killed in the battle, could be seen lying on the floor.
Locals in Idlib greeted rebels with sweets as they drove past with tanks and trucks they gained in the battle.
On Friday (August 17), the United Nations confirmed that veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi will replace former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan as the international mediator on Syria as the 17-month-old conflict slides deeper into civil war.
This came only a day after U.N. officials said their four-month-old observer mission in Syria will withdraw from the country next week. - Copyright Holder: AMATEUR VIDEO (CAN SELL)
