  • Story Text: Syrian rebels took full control of the Tel Abyad border gate on the Turkish frontier after battling Syrian government forces overnight, a Turkish official said on Wednesday (September 19).
    Speaking under condition of anonymity, the Turkish official confirmed that the border crossing was now under complete control of the rebels.
    Rebels already control two crossings on the northern border with Turkey and it is expected a third border point will help strengthen their control in the north and put more pressure on the army as they battle for control of Syria's largest city Aleppo not far away.
    Filmed from the Turkish side of the border, rebels could be seen on top of the border crossing buildings and hoisting the rebels' flag.
    Local Turkish citizens took bottles of water to Syrian rebels who had been fighting for control of the border crossing.
    "I am carrying bottles of water to Syria, to the Syrian opposition. They are very thirsty. They have been fighting since last night. So I am taking water to them" said one Akcakale resident.
