Eight Syrian opposition parties formed a new body on Tuesday (August 28) that is set to hold a conference in September 2012 to find possible solutions to the crisis in the country.
The main goal of the conference is, according to its organisers, to prevent Syria from entering a years-long civil war and to establish a democratic regime, Rajaa al-Nasser, Secretary General of Coordination Assembly, said in a statement.
"Our goal now is how to prevent Syria from going into a civil war and establishing a democratic regime. So any initiative is evaluated by its ability to achieve those goals. We will back such initiatives and our position will be against any initiative that does not achieve this goal," he said.
Seventeen months after an uprising against his rule began, President Bashar al-Assad remains in office and no single opposition leader has emerged who could unify the country.
Louay Hussein, President of Building the State Party, said the conference will be held to confront the danger of civil war.
"It [the conference] confronts the risks specified in the statement. So it confronts the regime, civil war as well as any foreign interference that would affect Syrians' support," he said.
The new opposition body said it is too early to respond to French President Francois Hollande suggestion of forming a representative provisional government. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
