- Story Text: Russia welcomed on Sunday (October 21) international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi's call for a temporary ceasefire in Syria's civil war, during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha beginning at the end of this week.
Brahimi, the joint U.N.-Arab League special envoy for the Syria crisis, has been criss-crossing the region with the aim of convincing Assad's main backers and his foes to support the idea of a truce during the holiday, which starts at dusk on Thursday (October 25).
Russia's ambassador to Syria, Azamatullah Kulmuhamedov, said Russia would back the truce initiative, speaking to journalists after meeting Brahimi in Damascus.
"Mr. Brahimi proposed an idea of what we can call a truce. We back this idea and we talked about it," he said.
Brahimi also met with President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday.
Syrian state television, which aired this footage, gave no details of the talks, though they are likely relate to Brahimi's call for a ceasefire.
Speaking with reporters after the meeting with Assad, Brahimi said he had received positive responses from opposition figures -- but he refused to comment on the government's position.
On Saturday he held talks with Syria's foreign minister, which the government official described as "constructive and serious".
Syria has so far given a guarded response to Brahimi's ceasefire proposal, suggesting it wants guarantees that rebels would reciprocate any move by Assad's forces.
