- Story Text: Smoke billowed from the Syrian town of Haram on Tuesday (October 23) as the bloodshed worsens ahead of a Muslim holiday.
The morning was punctuated by sounds of blasts and sustained gunfire could be heard from the nearby Turkish village of Besaslan.
Fighting between opposing sides inside Syria has worsened markedly in recent months, although neither side has been able to gain a distinct advantage, with government forces relying heavily on air power and artillery to batter the rebels.
International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi, who held talks in Damascus on Sunday (October 21) with President Bashar al-Assad, has proposed that Assad's forces and the rebels hold fire during the three-day Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha which starts on Friday.
Syrian rebels cast doubt on Monday (October 22) on prospects for a temporary truce, saying it was not clear how it could be implemented.
Activists say the 19-month-old conflict in Syria has killed at least 30,000 people.
