- Story Text: Over the Turkish border, grey smoke billowed out from the Syrian town of Haram on Thursday (October 25) shortly before the Syrian army command announced a ceasefire to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al Adha.
Sounds of small blasts and sustained gunfire in Haram could be heard in the nearby Turkish village of Besaslan.
Syria's army command said it will suspend military operations between Friday morning (October 26) and Monday (October 29) but said it reserved the right to respond to rebel attacks and bombings.
It said it would also respond to "terrorist groups trying to reinforce their positions by arming themselves and getting reinforcements" as well as neighbouring countries facilitating the smuggling of fighters across borders during that period.
International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi has called for a ceasefire during the Muslim holiday to stem the bloodshed in a 19-month-old conflict which activists say has killed at least 30,000 people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
