- Story Text: An explosion at the parking lot of a Syrian labour union building near a hotel where members of the office of Syria's special envoy representative are staying injures at least 11 people.
A blast in the parking lot of a Syrian labour union building on Sunday (November 4) injured at least 11 people and resulted in significant material losses.
The premises of the state-controlled labour union in Damascus, is located behind Dama Rose hotel where members of the office of Syria's special envoy representative, Lakhdar Brahimi, are staying in Damascus.
UN delegates could be seen stepping out of their rooms at the hotel to look at the scene of the blast.
The strength of the blast shattered glass doors leading to the terrace of some of the Dama Rose hotel rooms.
Clean up operations had already started with workers dusting the streets, while hotel workers removed shattered glass windows at the hotel.
The blast, which the television described as "terrorist" - the government's word for rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad - resulted in at least one person in critical condition, television reports said.
Opposition activists told Reuters the explosion was near heavily-guarded army installations in the heart of the capital.
Rebels have carried out a series of bombings targeting government and military buildings in Damascus this year, bringing the civil war to the heart of Assad's power.
Islamist militant groups Ahfad al-Rasoul and Ansar al-Islam said last month said they had planted bombs in a major state security compound in Damascus. They also claimed responsibility for suicide car bombs earlier in October that hit a security compound on the edge of Damascus. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
