- Story Text: Free Syrian Army fighters captured on Friday (November 9) a military compound in Ras al-Ain, a town on the border with Turkey, opposition forces claimed.
Ras al-Ain is an Arab and Kurd town located in the northeastern oil-producing province of Hasaka, 600 km (375 miles) from Damascus.
Amateur footage obtained by Reuters shows a group of rebels celebrating in front of a military compound in what is said to be Ras al-Ain town.
"The capturing of military compound, God is great," said one of the speakers in the video.
"Victory is very close Bashar, so hide wherever you want, we will reach you, by god's will," said another speaker in the video.
Dead bodies claimed to belong to President Bashar al-Assad's army were seen lying on the ground.
Another group of men were said to have been taken hostages by rebels.
Some of them were seen in the video standing next to a wall while being investigated by the rebels.
The opposition-linked Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is monitoring the conflict, said on Friday at least 20 members of the Syrian security forces were killed and several wounded when fighters from rebel battalions attacked the headquarters of a military security building in northern Syria.
On Thursday (November 8), Free Syrian Army fighters Ras al-Ain in a push to seize control of frontier areas from Assad's forces, a rebel commander and opposition sources said.
The report could not be independently confirmed.
In the last three months, the mainly Arab Sunni rebels have captured several outposts on the 800-km (500-mile) border, steadily moving toward the northeast, home to a large proportion of Syria's one-million-strong Kurdish minority.
The Kurdish Council, a coalition of Kurdish parties opposed to Assad, called on the Free Syrian Army to leave Ras al-Ain, saying the clashes, as well as fear of Syrian army bombardment, had prompted most of the town's 50,000 inhabitants to flee.
