Title:Nicaragua: High Turn-Out In Nicaraguan Elections
Date:4th November 1984
Summary:Nicaraguans went to polling booths for the first time in 5 years on November 4 and an 82 per cent voter turn-out gave the ruling Sandinistas 68 per cent of the vote. Main opposition parties boycotted the elections but of those who participated, the Conservative Democratic Party had 2nd place (12 per cent) and the Independent Liberals gained just over 10 percent. Nicaragua's new president and former Junta co-ordinator is Daniel Ortega. The US dismissed the elections but independent observers from the US and Britain - the British government declined an official invitation to send official observers - believed the polling was legitimate.
