- Story Text: A wave of violence continued to lash the northern Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez during the first days of the new year after six people, including two policemen, were shot dead by unknown gunmen around the city in separate events on Tuesday (January 5).
At the first crime scene, two local policemen were shot dead outside a garage.
According to eye witnesses, the policemen had arrived at the garage to investigate a crime when two men descended from an SUV and fired more than 50 shots at the officials. One of the officials died at the wheel of the police vehicle while his partner tried to escape but died a few metres from the vehicle.
Eye witnesses added the assassins stole the officials' weapons after killing them.
At the second crime scene, a 25 year-old man was shot dead by unknown gunmen while driving along in his vehicle to the south of the city. He was accompanied by his mother. After cutting him off, the assailants opened fire at the vehicle killing the young man instantly and injuring his mother. The woman was taken to the hospital suffering from serious wounds but died minutes after arriving.
Another victim, a female local human rights activist, was killed outside a fast food restaurant on the outskirts of the city. In days leading up to her death, she had taken part in diverse peace marches around the city.
Later that evening, a martial arts professor was shot dead after a man walked into his Karate academy and shot him five times without saying a word.
According to police reports, another seven killings were also reported during the last 24 hours around the city.
In 2006, Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a floundering army-led drug war.
About 49,000 soldiers have been deployed around the country but the army assault has also stoked turf wars between rival cartels, worrying foreign investors and Washington as killings soared above 7,000 people last year, taking the death toll over three years to above 16,000. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
