- Story Text: A two-tonne cake made with artificial sweetener was unveiled at a mall in Mexico City as part of Mother's Day celebrations. Dozens of families celebrated Mothers' Day (May 10) at a mall in Mexico City with a monstrous, two-tonne cake made with no-calorie sweeteners.
The over sixteen-foot (5 metre) tall cake was prepared with 200 pounds of artificial sweetener.
Actress Mayrin Villanueva cut the massive cake, speaking out on behalf of busy mothers whose eating habits suffer under the strain demands of raising children.
"Because mothers are a little gluttonous and we sacrifice a lot, we have a tendency eat what we shouldn't and blame ourselves. This is a way to cook without feeling guilty," she said.
Organizer Fernando Trueba said he had already sent an application to the Guinness committee to register the creation as the world's biggest cake made with artificial sweeteners and expected the record's confirmation in the coming days.
"This is the biggest cake made with no-calorie sweeteners. We are reporting it Guinness so they give us the certification. There's a possibility to break a record and within a week they will be calling us to give us the good news that Mexico has new Guinness record," he said.
As visitors surrounded the towering cake, one elderly woman stood out, celebrating Mothers' Day with her extensive family.
"At 96 years old she still has the spirit to celebrate with her seven children, 20 grandchildren, and 30 grandchildren," Aurora Cortina said of her mother.
Organisers added the cake was done on Mothers' Day to encourage Mexican moms to use artificial sweeteners as a healthy, tasty replacement for sugar.
Artificial sweeteners have a strong market in Mexico where health problems related to weight issues and diabetes are common. According to the Mexican Federation of Diabetes, around 7 million people suffer from diabetes in the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
