- Story Text: Irish band U2 rocked thousands of fans at Mexico City's Aztec stadium as part of their current 360 world tour on Wednesday (May 11). It was the first of three shows in five nights in Mexico City.
Hoards of fans waited to catch a glimpse of their idols outside their hotel.
The band members greeted shrieking fans and signed autographs before getting into an SUV and leaving en route to the stadium.
"U2 has been a very important band in many of our lives which has marked many generations from the 80s until now. I have seen some interviews they have given from their beginnings and you can tell they are really focused on music and changing the world through it," said a fan called Ivan.
At the Aztec stadium, one of the world's most famous and imposing stadiums, excited fans bought t-shirts, held banners with messages for their idols
"I really like U2. They have always be evolving and are on the forefront with new generations. Their talent did not dry out, they continue to evolve and that is why they are still with us," said fan Marisol.
There were several highlights during the concert. The loud stadium crowd serenaded Bono one day after his birthday.
Tracklisting included Crazy which metamorphosed into Discoteque, followed by Zooropa. Hold Me was also featured followed by With Or Without You which led into a special dedication from Bono before closing with Moment of Surrender.
According to the band's website, the Aztec stadium was one of the highest stadiums they've ever played in, edging the 360 stage. The band also said the night came to a powerful close when 100,000 cellphones were used to light up the imposing stadium. Reforma newspaper said 93,100 had attended the concert.
U2's tour is the most successful ever, beating the record set by The Rolling Stones four years ago, promoters Live Nation Entertainment said last month.
The Irish supergroup, will gross ticket sales of more than $700 million when their 360 tour finally wraps up in Canada in July, Live Nation said.
The U2 360 tour, staged in the round in a transportable stadium, will have been seen by more than 7 million people in 30 countries when it ends.
The Rolling Stones 2005-07 Bigger Bang Tour took $554 million in ticket sales, Live Nation said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
