- Story Text: Mexico's Interpol representative in El Salvador is seriously wounded and his wife killed after his vehicle is attacked.
Interpol agent Guillermo Medina was seriously injured on Friday (April 23) and his wife died after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle as they drove through downtown San Salvador.
Medina, the Mexican representative at a regional Interpol office in Central America, was also attacked in January, although authorities said there are no links between the two.
A third person was traveling in the car but conflicting information has emerged about that person's condition.
The attack against Medina and his wife, who was also Mexican, comes days after Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes warned that the Mexican armed drug gang known as "Los Zetas" were operating in El Salvador.
However, Deputy Head of Police Investigations Howard Coto said that authorities currently have no evidence to indicate that the attack was carried out by drug traffickers.
"We have been able to confirm Claudia Medina, the wife of Guillermo Medina, was killed up receiving a bullet shot. Medina is the link between the Interpol regional office which operates in El Salvador", he said.
Mexican drug trafficking gangs are growing in presence in Central America, where countries are used as a route to smuggle drugs from South America and Mexico towards the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
