- Story Text: Mexican actor Diego Luna promoted his new film "Mister Lonely" in Mexico City on Wednesday (May 27) in which he plays a Michael Jackson look-alike in the little-seen small budget production.
The film, which was co-produced by the UK, France, Ireland and the United States, was shot in 2007 and directed by Harmony Korine. Earlier showings had to be postponed due to lack of funds.
Luna, who co-stars with Samantha Morton, Denis Lavant, James Fox and Melita Morgan, plays the role of a young boy who survives living on the streets of Paris as a Michael Jackson impersonator.
During one of his shows, Michael meets a woman who impersonates Marilyn Monroe and decides to follow her to an island where she lives with her husband, Charlie Chaplin and her daughter, Shirley Temple.
At this place, where nobody is famous or grows old, the Pope, the Queen of England, Madonna, James Dean and other impersonators work with love and dedication, to create the largest show on earth.
Luna said many people wish to escape from reality.
"The amount of people that live where they don't want to be is very high, I think the film tells us that however strange we are, we always have to find the way to find a world where we feel better to generate it," he told a news conference.
"My character lives in terrible loneliness and basically in fear of getting to know himself. He decides to live through other characters, he decides to live through Michael Jackson," he added.
Luna has recently stared in "Rudo y Cursi" directed by Carlos Cuaron which tells the tale of two talented soccer playing brothers, portrayed by Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal who are plucked from their small village to play for Mexico's top teams.
It reunites Garcia Bernal, 30, and Luna, 29, on-screen for the first time since 2001's "Y tu mama tambien," which was written by the Cuaron brothers, directed by Alfonso Cuaron and nominated for an Academy Award. That film also thrust a new generation of Mexican talent into the global spotlight.
The two actors, whose parents worked in the entertainment industry, also have a production company, Canana films, that premiered one of the most anticipated movies, "Sin Nombre," this year at Sundance, the top U.S. festival for independent movies.
Mister Lonely was presented at the Toronto, Tribeca and Cannes Film Festivals. Canana films will premiere Mister Lonely at limited cinema theatres on May 29, again due a small budget. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
