- Story Text: Race to save trapped French caver continues in Mexico.
Mexican rescue workers continue their work on Friday (January 25) to rescue an injured French cave explorer who was trapped in a cave in the central Mexican state of Puebla after an underground collapse during an expedition.
Rescue workers were working around-the-clock to rescue 20 year-old Arthur Meauxone, who has been trapped in the cave since Tuesday. He is believed to be located some 300 metres underground and was unable to walk out due to a fractured knee.
The rescue operation has been impaired because a stretcher cannot be lowered into the hole which is too narrow, measuring some 45 centimeters in diameter.
Authorities hope to have Meauxone out of the cave by Saturday (January 26) and they are working on widening the hole in order to drop a line and bring him up.
"A group of French cave explorers who were exploring this cave encountered an underground collapse. There is a person with an injured leg, he's doing well and has food. There is a doctor from the rescue team with him right now and we are analyzing how to get him out, to set up a line in order to rescue him," State Civil Protection Worker, Jesus Lucio, told Reuters.
Five other of his expedition team members - three men and two women - were rescued by the state's civil protection rescue team.
They are aiding the rescue workers by guiding them down to Meauxone.
They are also keeping him company and providing food and water.
"At the moment everything is under control by Mexican authorities, they are supporting us completely and we hope that this concludes soon and successfully," said French caver Yuan Bringard.
The group of experienced cave explorers had been trapped for two days.
No details were readily available as to how the collapse occurred.
In 2004, six British cave explorers were trapped in a cave complex in Puebla for a week next to an underground river swollen by heavy rains. The team was eventually rescued. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
