- Story Text: Police in Mexico's tourist hotspot Cancun detained on Tuesday (October 05) 18 Cuban nationals who are in the country illegally and were said to be waiting for transport to the United States.
According to Quintana Roo's Attorney General's office, the detainees were seen at home and due to suspicious behaviour, police detained the group.
"The moment they see the uniformed police officer, some ran inside the home and some others ran outside. They were detained for that activity and we are investigating. And the moment they were detained, others started to come out and make various arguments and it is believed that they are all Cubans," Prosecutor for Quintana Roo state Rodolfo Garcia said.
According to the prosecutor's office, the 18 Cubans were to be driven to the US by land in smaller groups of two or three at a time.
Police also detained two people, one Mexican and one Cuban, who are suspected to have perpetrated the crime of bringing the group of 18 men and women into the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
