- Story Text: Mexican authorities said on Wednesday (January 12) they are completing all the necessary paperwork to extradite Bruce Beresford-Redman, a former producer of hit TV show "Survivor," to Mexico where he has been accused of murdering his wife.
U.S. officials arrested Beresford-Redman at his home in November 2010 and are holding him for extradition.
"It's a breakthrough for Mexican authorities and the relations with the U.S. government that there is already an arrest warrant and he is being held for extradition. It's a bit complicated, extradition due to all the paperwork, even because of Bruce's defense in a Los Angeles courtroom but we have confidence in both federal and US authorities," said Francisco Alor, Attorney General for Quintana Roo state.
The former producer of the reality show was arrested without incident by federal marshals and FBI agents. He has appeared in a federal court in Los Angeles, according to statements from the U.S. Attorney's office.
Beresford-Redman was arrested in Mexico in April on suspicion of strangling his wife Monica in the Caribbean resort of Cancun while on vacation with her and their two children.
Her body was found in mangroves near a luxury hotel where they were staying. Mexican authorities said an autopsy showed she had been choked to death after a blow to the head, and hotel employees and guests claimed to have seen and heard the two arguing.
Beresford-Redman was initially arrested in Mexico and later fled to his home in the wealthy Los Angeles enclave of Rancho Palos Verdes, where he has remained since.
In late May, he released a statement denying any guilt and saying his wife "was the axis around which our whole family revolved."
"I am devastated at her loss, and I am incensed at the suggestion that I could have had anything to do with her death. I am innocent," Beresford-Redman said in his statement.
By June, Mexican authorities had issued a request for his return to that country. The Mexican complaints claims Beresford-Redman and his wife had been having marital problems and that she had discovered he had been having an affair. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
