- Story Text: Rescue workers worked on Wednesday (April 14) to put out the blaze of a cargo aircraft that crashed late Tuesday near the airport in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey, killing five people, Mexican emergency authorities reported.
The aircraft, operated by privately held AeroUnion, crashed near a major road leading to the airport, killing as many as two people on board the aircraft and three on the ground, Mexican media reported.
Jorge Camacho of the local civil defense said the plane was an Airbus A-300.
"Reports from the site say it's an airplane accident on the highway going to the airport, the main road. It's important to mention that this accident was reported to the civil defense and airport authorities were on the scene immediately. We can confirm the plane that went down was Airbus 300. A large part of the plane is on airport grounds but another part is affecting the highway next to the airport," he said.
Emergency officials were unable to confirm the number of fatalities.
"The investigation and the technical aspects surrounding this accident will be carried out by the federal government and us. We will not only be supporting the government in the investigation but also supporting them in this emergency," he said.
Mexican security forces blocked off the area around the crash site as firefighters battled a blaze on the ground. At least one firefighter was hauled away on a stretcher after suffering from smoke inhalation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
