- Story Text: Two cargo trains collided in Mexico on Tuesday killing at least 13 people and wounding several others, including illegal migrants hitching rides, the state prosecutor's office said.
The crash occurred after a faulty track change in the early morning hours in the western state of Sinaloa.
Martin Gastelum, a spokesman for Sinaloa's public prosecutor's office, told Reuters that the accident occurred because "someone didn't change the tracks correctly.".
"At 2:40 in the morning this occurred in Sufragio, the crash of two trains in the municipality of del Fuerte. Two trains crashed there, one carrying corn and the other performing work in this area. The result of this accident were 13 deaths, 11 rescued and two who were rescued - it is still difficult to know if they can be saved. Four casualties were in the General Hospital of Los Mochis and included the driver, the controller and the machinist on the locomotive," said Francisco Diaz, the Director of the State System of Civil Protection.
One of the trains was carrying tonnes of corn, which was strewn all over the accident scene.
Every year hundreds of migrants from Central America risk their lives traveling thousands of kilometers through Mexico to illegally cross the border into the United States.
Many hitch rides on dangerous, fast-moving cargo trains hanging perilously off the sides where they sometimes slip to their death or lose limbs if they fall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
