- Story Text: The National Women's Institute (INMUJERES) launched a campaign called "Men against violence," to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Tuesday (November 25).
In Mexico, about 67 percent of women suffer from some type of violence at work, school, home and with their partner.
The campaign will include radio and television spots - using diverse personalities such as TV news anchors, actors, politicians and sportspeople - to persuade men to stop hitting women.
The campaign aims to put an end to macho and humiliating behaviour towards women and instill a healthy relationship instead.
Walls will be painted and banners will be placed in remote poor communities because broadcast media is limited in those areas.
Using slogans such as "Let's set an example, man to man!", "From man to man, more respect for women!" or "In the cool sense of the word, tone down violence against women," the advertisements will feature in media on a national scale.
The campaign looks to encourage conducts and indispensable values to drive equality between men and women.
"The intention of this campaign is to strengthen values and attitudes that promote the elimination of violent and discriminating behaviour towards women. To promote conducts and values indispensable to creating a fair and equal society," said the President of the National Women's Institute (INMUJERES), Rocio Garcia, during a news conference to present the campaign.
According to figures released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, in average, six women die every day in Mexico due to intentional deaths; four due to homicide and two due to suicide. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
