- Story Text: Dozens murdered over 72 hours in Ciudad Juarez as Mexican cartels battle for control.
A rash of bloody violence in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, across from Texas, accounted for one of the deadliest three-day periods since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the country's drug cartels in late 2006.
Even by Juarez standards, the death toll from Thursday (February 17) through Saturday (February 20) was high with Chihuahua Attorney General's Office spokesman Arturo Sandoval telling CNN that over 50 people had died, setting a record for the city this year.
Fourteen people, including a police officer, were reportedly killed on Thursday. Twenty people were killed on Friday, including a city police officer and state police investigator. On Saturday, 19 more people, including a highway patrol officer, were killed across the city.
Calderon announced on Saturday (February 20) that the army will strengthen its presence on the northern border which has become a bloody battleground between security forces and drug cartels In 2010, more than 3,000 people were killed in Ciudad Juarez in drug-related violence accounting for about 20% of the country's drug cartel murders that year.
More than 34,000 people in Mexico have been assassinated in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon deployed thousands of soldiers and federal police to crush cartels warring for lucrative trafficking routes to the United States after he took office in late 2006. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
