- Story Text: Mexico's new coach Javier Aguirre said on Wednesday (May 27) he is anxious to face El Salvador and lift Mexico into an automatic qualifying spot for the 2010 World Cup after a poor start by a team who seem unable to cope with the more physical style of other sides, especially away from home.
On April 3, Aguirre replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson and inherited a demoralised team along with many other deep-rooted problems. His debut -- it is his second time managing the team -- will take place on June 6 against El Salvador in the final stage of the CONCACAF qualifiers, played as a six-team mini league.
"It's an enormous responsibility to lead the national team, at a complicated moment, to put a word to it. There it is, we are not going to tear our hearts out. We have seven matches ahead of us, we have the obligation to win all seven. That is our obligation and go to the World Cup, that is why I was hired," Aguirre told a news conference.
Mexico is in fourth place of the table with three points, below the United States leading the table with seven, Costa Rica in second place with six points and Honduras in third with four.
El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago complete the classification with two points each.
"It's a time to buck up. We are at a stage where we can't afford to loose any more points. We need to pull our socks up. All of us as a group, as Pavel says, we as players realise when we have not given our best, now we can't afford to relax," said defense Carlos Salcido.
The top three sides qualify for South Africa 2010 and the fourth plays off against the fifth team from South America for another place.
After visiting El Salvador, Mexico will receive Trinidad & Tobago on June 10. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
