- Story Text: Two policemen and three suspected drug hitmen were killed during an attack followed by a shootout in the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco on Sunday (May 29) in apparent drug-related violence.
Armed men on board eight vehicles opened fire on local policemen killing one policeman and injuring another who later died in hospital.
A shootout between federal policemen and the men in question ensued.
Later that evening the bodies of two suspected drug hitmen were found in a bullet-sprayed vehicle and the body of another man was found inside a home in the neighbourhood of Las Margaritas.
"Some people were chasing him. I think they shot him close to the entrance of the neighbourhood. He came running over here. He ran in and died here. In my home's corridor," said an unidentified eyewitness.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has staked his presidency on crushing drug gangs whose turf wars have killed about 40,000 people since he came to power in 2006.
Rival drug gangs in recent years sometimes have fought over territory in Acapulco, which is home to around a million people in the state of Guerrero and is popular with tourists. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
