- Story Text: Mexico's President Felipe Calderon arrived in Northern Mexico on Monday (April 5), one day after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rattled the Mexico-California border area.
Calderon toured a hospital that was damaged in the earthquake and promised government support to those displaced by the quake.
"It's important that experts tell us exactly what happened so that you can feel calm when you return to your homes or when you are staying somewhere else that is safer. Those who have had to move because a wall the fell or a ceiling that collapsed will receive all of our support. You can count on our support," he said.
Dozens of aftershocks continued to rattle the area on Monday as families too scared to return to damaged homes milled around in streets and parks.
Two people died and more than 200 were injured when a 7.2 magnitude quake rocked the area near the border city of Mexicali on Sunday.
The tremor, felt as far north as Los Angeles, cracked main roads, toppled electricity posts and knocked down an empty multistorey car park under construction in Mexicali, a prosperous industrial city and busy border crossing.
Smaller tremors continued to shake buildings, adding to fears of another big quake.
Sunday's quake was centered in a lightly populated area but rattled nerves in the United States and across Latin America which has been shaken by devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
