- Story Text: Expo Seguridad Mexico (ESM), an exhibition showcasing the latest technology gadgets was inaugurated on Tuesday (April 21) in Mexico City as security becomes a top priority for the Mexican government after recent escalation of drug violence.
The main security product manufacturers, distributors and integrators displayed the newest and most innovative technology for consumers. Educational courses, seminars and conferences from experts also took place.
Public Security Ministers from around the country have been invited to the event and some will talk about the progress made by the government on security issues.
Security is a top priority for the Mexican government as some 6,300 people died in drug violence last year in an escalating conflict that is worrying Washington as it starts to spill over into U.S. cities including Phoenix and Tucson.
According to event organizers, the government's annual security budget for 2009 will grow to almost 30.1 billion Mexican pesos, up from 19.7 billion pesos in 2008.
U.S. President Barack Obama visited Mexico last week and promised to reinforce security along the U.S.-Mexican border and crack down on the flow of American weapons into Mexico that has helped drug gangs amass huge arsenals.
For many security has become a focal issue.
"There is increasing vandalism and I think we should all take care if we would like to hold on to our property. Preferentially we have to invest in our homes, at our businesses, it's important to take care," said exhibition visitor, Jessica Leon.
Orlando Flores from Mercedes-Benz highlighted the attributes of a bullet-proof Mercedes-Benz saying that the vehicles were designed to meet the needs of the country.
"It's a car meant for the conditions and needs of this country. It helps to have it during a kidnap and it's selling well," Flores said.
The latest CCTV technology was also on display. Cameras for both day and nighttime applications, interior and exterior cameras, anti-vandalism, IP, digital DVD, ram and hard drive recorders were showcased as well as the latest in the transmission of closed-circuit television to cell phone technology.
Security system salesman, Nicolas Figueroa, said CCTV cameras sold well to meet with demands of consumers who used them for different purposes.
"Most security systems are selling extremely well. They apply not only for security purposes but also for prevention, to know the time your employees arrive at your company, production and the whole thing. They serve a lot of purposes," he said.
The event, which closes on Thursday (April 23), is recognised as among the most important in Latin America after Brazil's security expo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
