Summary:One of Europe's worst chemical spills polluted large parts of the Rhine River after a fire at a warehouse owned by the Swiss chemical giant, Sandoz, which swept more than 30 tonnes of chemicals into the Rhine near Basle. From there, much of it was swept through West Germany and into the Netherlands within a few days of the November 1 fire.
