- Story Text: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday (February 16) that talks were still under way on a proposed nuclear fuel swap and the issue had not been concluded.
"The issue is not yet closed. We have already announced that we are ready for a fuel exchange within a fair framework," he said.
Ahmadinejad's order last week to start production of higher-grade uranium, rather than agree to the U.N.-brokered fuel swap proposal, exposes Tehran to new calls for U.N. sanctions from Western powers.
Ahmadinejad added that Iran would respond to any move to impose new sanctions.
"We will not welcome a repeat of their (westerners) wrong acts, they (sanctions) would not cause Iran any problems, they will create problem for the west. Of course, if somebody acts against Iran our response will definitely be firm enough, to make them regret those actions," Ahmadinejad told the news conference.
The U.N. has proposed that Iran swap enriched uranium for nuclear medicine fuel, in an attempt to defuse the risk of Tehran using the material for nuclear bombs. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
