- Story Text: The permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany report they have reached an agreement which they hope will become the draft of a resolution which brings sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program on Thursday (March 15).
The permanent five members of the Security Council and Germany are expected to present a copy of the resolution on Iran to the Security Council on Thursday (March 15).
Speaking to reporters at the United Nations on Wednesday (March 14), Emyr Jones Parry, the British Ambassador to the United Nations said, "We have asked for consultations at 11o' clock tomorrow and our hope is that at that stage we can put forward a text, and that the text will enjoy the support of those working on it, and that then it will be up to the council to decide how it wishes to deal with it."
The five permanent U.N. Security Council members -- the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia -- plus Germany are discussing new sanctions on Iran for missing a February 21 deadline to suspend uranium enrichment, the process that can make atomic fuel or material for warheads.
It appears that all six parties have had to compromise to reach this point. A reporter asked Alejandro Wolff, U.S. ambassador to the UN if he was satisfied with the result because other delegations had said that they were not totally happy but that they would take it as a compromise.
"I am not totally happy either but I take it as a compromise, that is a good way of putting it," said Wolff
The six participants of the negotiations used the meeting to come to a broad agreement on some additional changes that were presented by delegations today.
The goal now is to receive confirmation from the six respective governments, and to then distribute a draft resolution to the 10 rotating members of the 15-nation U.N. Security Council on Thursday, who could vote on it next week. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
