Title:Gulf: Iranian Rescue Teams Recover 150 Bodies After Iranair Passenger Jet Shot Down By United States Navy Cruiser In Gulf
Date:3rd July 1988
Summary:A United States Navy cruiser, the Vincennes shot down an Iranian civil airliner over the southern Persian Gulf on July 3, apparently mistaking it for an attacking jet fighter. All 290 people aboard the airliner were killed. The attack occurred only minutes after the Vincennes had been involved in a skirmish with Iranian patrol boats and a helicopter. Although the US government expressed regret over the loss of innocent life, it nonetheless defended the decision to open fire.
