Summary:The US space shuttle Discovery successfully lifted off the launch pad at Cape Canaveral on September 29, reopening the US manned space programme. It was the first US manned launch since January 28 1986, when the shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after lift-off killing all seven astronauts on board. Discovery landed back on schedule on October 3 after a smooth re-entry.
