++EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: RESENDING WITH FULL SCRIPT++++ A Palestinian gunman infiltrated a Jewish settlement in the West Bank under cover of darkness on Saturday (April 3), killing a settler and wounding his daughter before soldiers shot him dead, an army spokesman said.
Israel immediately condemned the attack, for which the Palestinian militant group Hamas claimed responsibility.
"Well it's another Sabbath massacre when an Israeli civilian was killed by a Palestinian terrorist who infiltrated his village, shot his daughter, and then killed the father. It's another example of terrorism directed against innocent civilians," said the Israeli Government spokesman, Avi Pazner.
After the attack Israeli soldiers launched house-to-house searches for militant suspects in Tulkarm on Saturday morning, and in nearby Nablus, witnesses said.
The Israeli army said soldiers arrested 23 Palestinians in Nablus but had no immediate comment on the raid in Tulkarm.
In a series of newspaper interviews on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon threatened Palestinian President Yasser Arafat with assassination -- drawing criticism from Israel's main ally, the United States.
Israel's government declared in September that Arafat -- holed up in his battered headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah for more than two years -- should be "removed".
But the elderly president, regarded by Palestinians as a symbol of their struggle for statehood, has scoffed at such threats, saying he would welcome "martyrdom".
Speaking in English at his battered headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah a day after Sharon made his threat in an interview with Israeli newspapers, Arafat said: "I don't care for it. I am caring for my people, for our children, for our women, for our students."
