Charlie Hebdo's first edition since an attack by Islamist gunmen sold out again on Thursday (January 15) in the French capital as Parisians raced to get their hands on the latest issue.
Like the day before, the issue sold out within minutes at newspaper kiosks and Parisians who missed their chance seemed determined to continue to look for a copy in the coming days.
The front page of Charlie Hebdo's January 14 edition shows a cartoon of a tearful Mohammad with a sign "Je suis Charlie" (I am Charlie) below the headline: "Tout est pardonne" (All is forgiven). Under the name of the satirical magazine, a red banner with Charlie's motto: 'Irresponsible newspaper'.
"I had been told to come at 6 a.m. but the newsstand was closed and opened at 7 a.m. So I did not get my Charlie issue, there you are. But I will try again tomorrow, otherwise through the internet or anywhere. I will try by all means to obtain my Charlie," a customer from the sixteenth arrondissement of the capital, Amelie Goncalves said.
A total five million copies of so-called "the survivors' edition" are to be printed, dwarfing the normal 60,000 print run.
Customers purchasing the issue said they were hoping that things would calm down.
A customer of Moroccan origin Aicha Sabri, said she felt sad because the Prophet Mohammad would not like to see people killed like those who died were.
"I was really touched, and I have tears in my eyes hoping that all people will be left in peace a little bit. The Prophet Mohammad would not like people to be killed, I think it's unbearable and muslims are really sad," Sabri said.
Seventeen people died in Paris in three days of violence that began with the attack by two Islamist gunmen on the offices of Charlie Hebdo on Jan. 7 - in which 12 people were killed - and ended with a siege at a kosher supermarket two days later.
At least 3.7 million marched through Paris and French cities on Sunday (January 11) to honour the memory of the journalists, police officers and supermarket customers who had died. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
