- Story Text: Scores of Palestinians who attended Muslim prayers in al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem on Friday (January 16), protested over publication of satirical images of Prophet Mohammad by the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, some of them setting fire to a flag of the French Republic.
Seventeen people, including journalists and police, were killed in three days of violence that began last week in Paris with a shooting attack on the political weekly Charlie Hebdo, known for its satirical attacks on Islam and other religions.
Waving Hamas and Islamist flags, demonstrators in al-Aqsa compound, shouted "Our leader is Mohammad" and also chanted slogans against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has attended a massive march in Paris to honour the victims of killings by Islamic militants.
Abbas has been vilified on social media and in newspaper cartoons for going to the French capital rather than visiting Gaza, which he has not been to since before last summer's war with Israel.
Al-Aqsa mosque, situated in Jerusalem's old walled city, is regarded by Muslims as the third-holiest site after the cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
