- Story Text: United States (U.S.) Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday (January 16) laid a wreath outside the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, where two Islamist gunmen killed 12 people more than a week ago.
Since the attack on Charlie Hebdo last Wednesday (January 7), people have flocked daily to the site to pay tribute to the victims, laying flowers and sticking well-wishing notes on the building.
Kerry started the day by meeting French President Francois Hollande, giving him a hug in the courtyard of the Elysee presidential palace.
Kerry said his visit to France was "to give a big hug" to Paris. Senior U.S. officials were absent from a commemoration march held in Paris on Sunday (January 11) attended by dozens of world leaders. President Barack Obama's administration conceded that was an omission.
French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said Kerry had told him he was sorry he had not been able to take part in the march.
"He was touched, and when he was in India, at that moment, when he saw the millions demonstrating, he told me: 'It was painful not to be there, to not be there," Fabius said.
Kerry later attended a ceremony in Paris town hall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
