The French people managed to respond to the aggression that targeted them with an unprecedented republican mobilisation. They expressed their attachment to the values that form the foundation of our country. They didn't let themselves be overtaken by fear, they refused to make generalisations, they recalled the strength and the importance of secularism, of fraternity to insure our life together. It is this very nation which needs -- after this test that it overcame with pride, dignity and unity -- this same nation needs to come together today to give our country the economic strength which will be able to both influence the international stage and offer a future to each one of our fellow citizens." The only wish I want to make today is that we be able to unite, take decisions responsibly to give our country strength and meaning to what we do, so that our fellow citizens can feel united in one nation -- one nation, one France, one people, which need to be aware that our economy today is also a condition for its cohesion." - Story Text: French president Francois Hollande urged unity in France around economic growth during his annual New Year address to economic players on Monday (January 19).
Hollande began his speech by commending French citizens for their demonstration of solidarity against the deadly attacks that took place earlier this month.
"A nation is a people. The French people managed to respond to the aggression that targeted them with an unprecedented republican mobilisation. They expressed their attachment to the values that form the foundation of our country. They didn't let themselves be overtaken by fear, they refused to make generalisations, they recalled the strength and the importance of secularism, of fraternity to insure our life together," Hollande said.
But the French president also urged the importance of transferring this energy towards building a more influential national economy.
"This was intended as a ceremony of good wishes, which today feels a bit different. The only wish I want to make today is that we be able to unite, take decisions responsibly to give our country strength and meaning to what we do, so that our fellow citizens can feel united in one nation -- one nation, one France, one people, which need to be aware that our economy today is also a condition for its cohesion," Hollande said.
The annual address took place at the French presidential palace and was attended by government and social leaders. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
