- Story Text: New York City mayor Bill de Blasio visited various Paris sites on Tuesday (January 20) to pay his respects to the victims of the terror attacks that took place earlier this month.
The mayor placed a wreath in front of the Hyper Cacher supermarket and the offices of Charlie Hebdo, where a total of 17 lives were lost over the course of three days starting January 7.
At a news conference with his Parisian counterpart Anne Hidalgo, De Blasio said the bond between the two sister cities has grown stronger through this shared experience.
"Paris and New York have walked the same path in so many ways. We have borne the brunt of terror and we have over many years shown the world an example, each in our own way, of tolerance and inclusion, of a pluralistic society, a multicultural society," he said.
Hidalgo said de Blasio was the first to call her after the initial attack. De Blasio said there are many parallels between the Charlie Hebdo attacks and the terrorist attack on New York City's Twin Towers in 2001.
"This attack, like 9/11, is a turning point moment for Paris. 9/11 was a turning point moment for us. Every one of us who was in New York that day remembers where we were and remembers the way it changed our lives. For the people of Paris, these attacks had that same impact, and it challenges us to find a way forward," de Blasio said.
The two mayors lit candles at Place de la Republique, the site of a huge demonstration that took place on January 11.
Hidalgo said she hoped the people of Paris will grow stronger and more connected as a result of the tragedy.
"New York also had a terrible experience with a terror attack, and I think the people of New York came away from this experience stronger. It's this same experience that he (Bill De Blasio) came to share with us (the people of Paris)," she said.
De Blasio will return to New York tonight, after spending just one day in the French capital. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
