- Story Text: Around five hundred people gathered on Tuesday (January 20) in Kyrgyzstan capital to protest against French magazine Charlie Hebdo's religious cartoons. Protesters in Bishkek were holding posters with Prophet Mohammad's name on them and banners reading "We love Mohammad" and "We are against cartoons of our prophets".
"Today we will speak with wisdom as Allah commanded us. We will protect our values and will not fall for provocations. Because their main idea was to provoke response from Muslims," organiser of the protest Kadyr Malikov said.
French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published a picture of Mohammad weeping on its cover last week after gunmen stormed its offices, killing 12 people. The gunmen said the attack was revenge for cartoons the magazine had published mocking Islam.
"This Charlie magazine is an obscene magazine of cartoons. It was mocking not only our religion, it was mocking Christianity and Islam. They were making these provocations for years. And the French state was intentionally giving them way," one of the protesters in Bishkek Ozubek Azhy Chotonov said.
