- Story Text: Four men have been placed under formal investigation and detained as part of the inquiry into the Islamist militant attacks in Paris two weeks ago that claimed 17 victims, the Paris prosecutor said Wednesday (January 21).
Francois Molins said these four are believed to have been complicit to the crimes committed by Amedy Coulibaly, the Islamist gunman who held several hostages in a Kosher supermarket on January 9 before being killed by police.
"As a result of 12 detainments and hearings that took place, it was decided during the night from Monday to Tuesday to remand Willy P, Michael A, Christophe R and Tonino G before the anti-terrorist magistrate to take into account their support in the criminal acts of Amedy Coulibaly," Molins told a news conference in Paris.
The investigation will continue in order to look for possible accomplices, particularly abroad, and international cooperation will continue with authorities particularly in Turkey, Spain and Belgium, Molins said.
"Three have been placed in provisional detention as per the prosecution's request and the fourth was the subject of a ruling for temporary incarceration pending a deferred discussion on his detention, which should take place at the end of the week," Molins said.
The prosecutor said there was no new information on possible accomplices of the Kouachi brothers, the two gunmen who attacked Paris satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
"Up until today, these investigations have essentially progressed on what I've come to call the Coulibaly segment and not on the Kouachi brothers segment," he said.
French prosecutors had asked magistrates on Tuesday to open a formal investigation into the four men, who are suspected of helping prepare the attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris that came at the end of three days of violence in the capital.
The four suspects, aged 22 to 28, have been in police custody since Friday. One of them is also under investigation for having weapons. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
