- Story Text: Several hundred Kurdish protesters have marched through
Berlin's Kreuzberg district to mourn the death of a fourth
Kurd who died last Saturday following the February 17 shooting
at the Israeli consulate.
Holding red flowers and chanting, thousands of mourners
filled Berlin's Kreuzberg district on Friday (March 5) to
mourn the death of Sinan Karakus.
Karakus died from gunshot wounds after supporters of
Kurdish guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan stormed Berlin's
Israeli consulate last month amid reports that Israeli
intelligence had helped Turkey capture Ocalan in Kenya.
Details of the shootings remain unclear.According to the
Berlin hospital which carried out the autopsy on Karakus, the
victim died of gunshot wounds to his head.
The two Israeli security guards who fired the deadly shots
have left Germany and returned to their homeland.
Ismail Hakki Kosan, a Green Party Member in Berlin's city
government, told Reuters: "On March 24 the trial against
Abdullah Ocalan begins. If until then the EU and the German
government have not decided to send delegations to ensure a
fair trial and make sure he is not sentenced to death we must
count on further protests which possibly are not going to be
all peaceful."
Germany is home to about 500,000 Kurds, the largest exile
community in the world.
