There are always individuals, not only among Muslims, that have divergent views just like in other groups in the community. It's important to say clearly that regardless of who you are, we don't accept such things." HUSSAIN SPEAKING FROM A PODIUM WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL STANDING BEHIND HIM (SOUNDBITE) (Danish) SPOKESMAN FOR THE DANISH MUSLIM COUNCIL, ZUBAIR BUTT HUSSAIN, SAYING: "What more can we do? We could do more than look at the context of the debate going on in society that people should be excluded - it's an attitude you see more and more. If you sense young people are becoming distant, you should respond to that so they don't embrace this type of radicalism." - Story Text: A spokesman for the Danish Muslim Council condemned on Sunday (February 15) the two attacks in Copenhagen that left two people dead.
He was speaking after police shot dead a 22-year-old Danish-born gunman after he killed two people at a Copenhagen synagogue and an event promoting free speech.
Two civilians - a synagogue guard and a film-maker - were killed and five police were wounded in the two separate attacks in the Danish capital on Saturday.
Witnesses to the Copenhagen attacks said the gunman fired up to 40 shots at a cafe hosting a free speech event with Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has received death threats for depicting the head of the Prophet Mohammad on a dog. Vilks was unharmed.
The gunman then moved on to a nearby synagogue where the guard, protecting a young girl's confirmation, was gunned down.
"I don't think that there is anyone in Denmark that has any doubts that the average Danish Muslims don't support such things. There are always individuals, not only among Muslims, that have divergent views just like in other groups in the community. It's important to say clearly that regardless of who you are, we don't accept such things," said the spokesman for the Danish Muslim Council, Zubair Butt Hussain.
Danish authorities have been on alert since Islamist gunmen killed 17 people in three days of violence in Paris in January that began with an attack on weekly Charlie Hebdo, long known for its acerbic cartoons on Islam, other religions and politicians. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
