- Story Text: Hundreds of people gathered outside the Danish embassy in Paris on Monday (February 16) night to show solidarity with the citizens of Denmark after the weekend's deadly shootings in Copenhagen.
Many people left tributes, including candles and flowers outside the Danish embassy in honour of the two victims of Sunday's deadly attacks, which targeted a synagogue and an event promoting free speech.
Henrik, Prince Consort of Denmark paid a visit to the embassy to pay his respects, as did French Prime Minister Manuel Valls.
Anne Dorte Riggelsen, the Ambassador of Denmark in France, said she was moved by the show of support from French citizens.
"It's really moving, because what I feel is that everyone feels Danish, like we all felt French, Charlie, cop, Jew. And this solidarity that's almost physical and corporeal, is very, very important for my country, for my people because today we are in mourning," Riggelsen said.
The parallels between this weekend's shootings and the violence that took place in Paris in January, in which 17 people were killed, left an impression on many demonstrators.
Nikoline Krabbe, a Danish citizen who has been living in Paris since August, said she was touched by the number of people who showed up at the Danish embassy to show their support.
"I think it's nice when I can't be at home and be supportive there, then I think it's important to come here and be supportive about my country. And I'm really really touched that there are so many French people that are supporting like we were supporting when the Charlie Hebdo was happening," Krabbe said.
Danish authorities said the actions of the 22-year-old gunman were possibly inspired by the attack on French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in January.
The Danish intelligence chief said the gunman was known to intelligence services prior to the shooting and had probably acted alone. Police said he had a record of violence, gang-related activities and weapons possession.
On Monday, police said they had charged two people with aiding the suspected gunman. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
