- Story Text: Triumphant crowds move through Sadr City with helmet
of pilot of U.S. helicopter that came down n the area earlier.
The crowds moved through Sadr City on Sunday (August
8) chanting as they held aloft the helmet taken from a U.S.
helicopter that came down in the area earlier.
They also displayed phones and pieces of debris taken
from the aircraft.
The U.S. army said a military helicopter had made a
"precautionary landing" near the volatile Shi'ite
neighbourhood of Baghdad.
"We had an OH-58 Delta helicopter which made a
precautionary landing... Both pilots are safe," Major
General Peter Chiarelli, commander of the 1st Cavalry
Division, told reporters.
He said the aircraft landed northwest of the mainly
Shi'ite Sadr City suburb of Baghdad, scene of clashes
between U.S. forces and militiamen loyal to radical Shi'ite
cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
Local residents, however, claimed they had shot the
helicopter down.
Clashes erupted again in the area later. Explosions
shook surrounding buildings as youths fired RPGs and
sprayed automatic gunfire along the small alleyways.
