- Story Text: Two dead in shooting, Palestinians wounded in raid
as violence surges. Palestinian PM continues preparations
for peace talks despite this latest bloodshed
Two Israelis were shot dead on Tuesday (November
18) at a roadblock outside the West Bank city of Bethlehem,
a military source said.
The army is investigating whether the attack was a
roadside shooting or the work of a sniper, the source said,
adding that both of those shot died in a Jerusalem hospital.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The attack threatened to undermine renewed efforts by
the new Palestinian government of Prime Minister Ahmed
Qurie to negotiate a truce with militant groups.
The shooting occurred at the entrance to a highway
outside the village of El Khader, not far from the West
Bank city of Bethlehem, the source said.
Soldiers clamped a curfew on the village of El Khader
and launched house-to-house searches for the assailants,
the Israeli army and witnesses said. Witnesses said at
least three Palestinians were arrested.
Meanwhile, in Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza
Strip, Israeli soldiers raided Rafah refugee camp before
dawn, destroying the house of a relative of a boy killed in
the area last week, eyewitnesses said,
Doctors said seven Palestinians were wounded, with two
in a critical condition. Witnesses said at least 3 houses
had been demolished so far.
Witnesses said gunbattles broke between Palestinian
gunmen and Israeli soldiers and militants said there were
Israeli casualties.
Another attack on Israelis was reported in the northern
Gaza Strip where an explosive device went off at the Erez
crossing, but there were no reported injuries, Army Radio
said.
Israeli officials reacted angrily to Tuesday's
shootings.
Government spokesman Avi Pazner said Palestinians were
doing little to halt attacks and renewed calls for action
to be taken against those responsible for violence.
"There is lots of talks on the Palestinian side about
terrorism, but they are doing nothing, and killing and
murder continues unabated. It is imperative that the
Palestinian Authority stops talking and takes immediate
steps against the terrorist organization disarm the
terrorists, arrest their leaders and destroy their
infrastructure," he said.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie said that talks
with Israel to seek a ceasefire were still in their initial
stages, but warned Israel from "any tactical moves."
"The renewal of our contacts with the Israeli side is
still at its initial stages. I can't say whether we're
getting positive or negative results from these contacts
but we are serious about achieving something from those
contacts. We hope the Israelis are as serious as we are in
these contacts and I warn the Israelis from any tactical
moves" Qurie told reporters in Ramallah on Tuesday, a day
after holding talks with an Egyptian mediator and
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
The talks, coupled with signals from militants that
they might accept a ceasefire, are to be followed by
meetings in the coming days to work out a truce pact.
Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon speaking during a
visit to Italy on Tuesday said that he hoped to meet Qurie
soon to discuss how to restart a U.S.-sponsored "road map"
peace plan.
He said Israel would eschew military action as long as
there were no more Palestinian suicide bombings or other
attacks.
Palestinian leaders have said they can do little to
control militant factions since most operate in areas under
military occupation, breeding popular resentment, and any
crackdown would risk civil war unless Israel withdrew
forces first.
