- Story Text: Russian billionaire and NBA New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov voted in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk on Sunday (March 4), casting his ballot hours ahead of his competition in the race for president, who are all voting in Moscow.
Prokhorov, Russia's third richest man, is challenging Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and three others for the seat that Putin is forecast to win outright on Sunday.
After casting his ballot at polling station No. 1110 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia's third largest city, Prokhorov told media members about his plans for the future.
"The creation of a new party is already happening. Our citizens have actively become involved in the political battle and I plan to create a new political force. It will be absolutely new, it will unite our citizens on the principle of civil responsibility," Prokhorov said.
In a recent poll by the Levada Centre, a Russian social research firm, Prokhorov is expected to take 6 percent of the vote. Prokhorov said he hopes to beat Putin, but has made clear he views the vote as a springboard to a lasting political role.
Prokhorov also faces A Just Russia party leader Sergei Mironov, who ran for president in 2004, and perennial presidential candidates Gennady Zyuganov, who leads the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
