- Story Text: A quick count by the Indonesia Survey Institute's (LSI) on Monday (April 9) indicated candidates from Partai Aceh, Zaini Abdullah and Muzakir Manaf, as the top contenders in the race for Governor.
Apart from Abdullah and Manaf, the four other governor candidates and running mates were Ahmad Tajudin and Tengku Suriansyah, Irwandi Yusuf and Muhyan Yunan, Darni M. Daud and Ahmad Fauzi, Muhammad Nazar and Nova Iriansyah.
The LSI said more than 70 percent of 3.2 million eligible voters had taken part in the election in the province, whose violence is linked to the aftermath of the insurgency.
The survey institute declared candidate and running mate, Zaini Abdullah and Muzakir Manaf, winners in the Aceh election after gaining more than 54 percent of the vote.
"With 95.5 percent last data entry, this time we can say the election was held in one round and won by candidate and running mate, Zaini Abdullah and Muzakir Manaf, with 54.4 percent of votes," Chandra Hendarnoto, researcher of Indonesia's LSI, told journalists at a news conference held after the vote count.
The main political fault lines are between Partai Aceh, a party formed by former GAM (Free Aceh Movement) that controls parliament, and Yusuf, an independent who won elections in 2006 but stepped aside in favor of a caretaker administration in February when his term ended.
Aceh was embroiled in the separatist conflict for three decades, including some periods under military rule. During the conflict, abuses were rife and thousands of civilians are said to have died.
Aceh benefited from billions of dollars of donors fund since the tsunami and has recovered gradually, but a key demand for many people is stability Quick counts have, in the past, proved highly accurate, although the earliest counts have sometimes been skewed by the fairly small sample. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
