- Story Text: Amr Moussa, one of the leading candidates in Egypt's presidential elections on Wednesday (May 23), said he hopes the right person is elected in the "time of crisis" the country is facing.
Egypt is voting in its first free elections since the downfall of leader Hosni Mubarak.
Moussa was foreign minister before moving to the Arab League and has strong name recognition.
His rivals include the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohamed Mursi; Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, an Islamist who has drawn support ranging from liberals to hardline Salafi Muslims; and Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, who like his former boss, once commanded the air force.
"Yes I am optimistic, thanks to God," Moussa said in Arabic.
"I hope they will elect the right person, I hope they can elect a president that will lead Egypt in this time of crisis," Moussa followed up in English.
The election is a novelty for a nation where elections during the 30-year rule of Mubarak were thinly attended rigmaroles in which the result was a foregone conclusion. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
